Overview of Virginia Court Records

Shelf of Virginia court records volumes

Every court in the Commonwealth maintains a clerk’s office. These offices receive, process, and maintain all records of the cases brought before that court, as well as other records and papers relevant to that court’s jurisdiction and mandated by law.

Records maintained by the SCV Clerk’s Office include petitions, motions, appellate briefs and the corresponding record for each set of briefs (called the appendix) that includes content culled from lower court proceedings. The clerk also maintains records of attorneys qualified to practice in Virginia and other administrative records.
